ASK VANESSA

This month’s “Ask Vanessa” question is from Melissa Lucious of Northern California:

Q I’ve booked a job doing the makeup for a contestant in a local beauty pageant.  I’ve never done a pageant, any tips you can share?

A   First, congratulations on your booking Melissa.  I have done makeup for several pageants and they are so fun and exciting. Here are a few tips to ensure your jobs goes smoothly.

Since your contestant will be in front of numerous cameras and hot lights, the makeup application should be applied accordingly. False lashes, primers and waterproof makeup are a must.  When you are applying the makeup use a heavy hand.  Bright lights will wash out color so you must use higher-pigmented, full coverage makeup. Be sure to bring a digital camera and take photos periodically throughout the application to ensure proper blending and color placement.   The overall look should be flawless, well blended and should ooze glamour and color.

There are some things you should consider when selecting your colors and products. First, you need to know what color the contestant will be wearing and match your makeup accordingly.  It is also important to note that the makeup you apply for the “interview portion  be more subdued than the evening gown portion.

You will find that your contestant and others may come to you for some obsure items and it’s best to come prepared.  From my experience, in addition to makeup you should also bring:  safety pins, stain remover, scissors, double-stick tape, mints, lint remover, band-aids, body lotion, tweezers, bobby pins, Vaseline (for their teeth) and hair ties. As we say in the makeup world, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Thanks for sending in your question Melissa. I hope this information has helped and I wish you the best on your pageant!
